The sanctioner of all human magic, The Grand Magistrate decides when, where and how magic is used in the empire. Once a Grand Magistrate is appointed, the position lasts a lifetime... or until someone decides to cut it short.
For this piece I thought I'd take a different approach in modeling the forms. Instead of filling out the entire dynamic range, I decided to crunch the dark into black. I thought this would help the silhouette and forms really pop. In addition, I tried to limit my hue shifts and keep it simple, as I felt it would fight with the harsh black contrast. My main inspirations for this illustration was Leyendecker and various comic book artists.
